So my fellow Bronies, there is no denying it now, “Equestria Girls” is a reality, until I saw the trailer a week or two ago on youtube, and saw on Hasbro’s official website a section for the movie, and a link to the movie screenings on the website, I was a proponent of “Equestria Girls” denial. At first thought it was just a spoof by some Bronies, an April fools joke, then when I saw more information, I began to think that perhaps they would release toys, but not an actual movie or television series. Yet alas, here it is, and it is coming to theaters in about a month.

What do we make of this? Given in the comment pages of the trailer videos, it seems like some Bronies are salivating at the mouth while other Bronies are ready to march on Hasbro studies, treating this upcoming movie as the greatest possible betrayal of My Little Pony.

I am neither able nor willing to tell other Bronies what they should do or think, but I would like to give my thoughts on the matter. In a nutshell, I fall somewhere between the extremes. I am willing to give it a chance, and will, if I am able, go see it in theaters when it comes out. Essentially, I have hopes for the movie, but I fear the worst, and unfortunately, I see the negative outcomes far outweighing the positives.

From the looks of the movie, it has a bit of a little mermaid feel to it, the trailer showed two instances of Twilight getting really close to a jock-looking “prince charming” archetype. So there is going to be a love story, but it is also going to retain the element of adventure.

I have to say that I am grateful for Equestria Girls being only a movie and not a whole series in of itself. Although, I do believe that Hasbro is testing the waters so to speak, they will probably, if reviews are raving, create a spinoff series, if they are not already plotting for it. Although it would be interesting to say the least, to have both a spinoff series and a continuation of My Little Pony at the same time.

OK, so the biggest red flag that is going up is canonical continuity, is this supposed to be canon? I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be canonical, unless of course, they took the weasel approach made the whole thing Twilight’s dream. In terms of canonical continuity, I have a fear and a hope. The fear is that this new human boyfriend who Twilight meets will come back with her through the portal, become ponified, and become a new main character to serve as Twilight’s boyfriend, perhaps to shake up the plot a little bit now that she is an Alicorn and they need a new plot mine with “learning about friendship” becoming a little bit stale. They could perhaps also have Twilight’s new boyfriend serve as a foil to Spike, seeing as he is the only male main character. Yet all in all, I think I speak for most of us when I say, keep relationships out of the plot until they wrap up the entire series, for more information, see my note on why I believe Sparity will one day be canon.

Another key red flag is Spike being a dog, this is a rather poor move on their part. They should have just made Spike pose as the younger brother of Twilight. I have a suspicion that perhaps they did this to avoid getting into the controversy of determining Spikes rather ambiguous age. It seems like the herd is split over Spike being the same age, if not a year or two younger, than the Cutie Mark Crusaders. I seem to be in the minority holding to the interpretation that Spike is only a few years younger than the Mane Six. Although when it comes to Age, I never interpreted the ponies to be eligible for high school. I always thought of them as being between 18-21, obviously graduated from high school (relatively speaking).

The only question about Spike being a dog in Equestria girls, rather in movie form or if they do turn this into a whole series, is what becomes of Sparity? In the preview trailer, it shows Spike’s eyes lighting up with hearts, is he still going to be crushing on Rarity, even though he is a dog? Or will it feature a crossover with Littlest Pet Shop, having Zoe making an appearance?

In terms of turning Equestria Girls into a series, it would be interesting if they wrote Twilight and Spike out of My Little Pony and into Equestria girls. This would not, in all honesty, surprise me, Twilight’s role has decreased with every passing season. Spike is my favorite character, yet in all honesty, if they ever were going to write off a character, it would be him, as he plays the least important role of any of the major characters, I am sorry to say. Yet, this is precisely why I don’t want this to happen, and do not think they will, yet see it as a possibility.

Even though it is not likely, there is something feasibly good that could come out of Equestria Girls. With the establishment of a canonical human world, they could foster a return of Tirek, one of the greatest original villains. The main character in G1, as most of you know, was a girl named Megan whom the ponies recruited to help overthrow Tirek. It would be quite kick-ass, if in fact, Twilight met a grown up version of Megan in the human world, forshadowing a following movie in which Tirek returns from the dead to have his vengeance on Equestria, and the main six have to go the human world to bring Megan back.

Well, we won’t know until the movie premiers, if it will be good or bad, but I will do my best to “love and tolerate.”

This review is really good! I liked how you pointed out what could be good, and what could be bad. Perhaps Spike should go out of business, but then again, he tends to bring humor in to it, with the exception of Pinkie Pie's silliness. As for the humanizing of all the mane six, I can only say that that looks awful, and although I still remain a brony at heart, for this film, I think I must say no. I definitely agree with you that this could mean joy for some of our brony friends, and for some of us, this will be a complete train wreck. I must honestly say that I hope they don't turn this into a spin-off series, because if they do, FiM is doomed.
